GFWC Clarksville Women's Club at a Glance

A Distinct Identity

Clarksville’s General Federation of Women’s Club is located at 1983 Madison Street.  Clarksville Women's Club is rich in history surrounding the club’s beginnings in Montgomery County.
This year is the 122nd anniversary of the Clarksville Federation of Women’s Clubs.
In 1901, local women’s clubs joined together to form The Federation of Clarksville Women’s Clubs.  The original purpose was to house and support a circulating library for the community but over the years the ladies of the club have done so much more.
In 1918, the clubs purchased a stately Victorian building at the corner of Main and N. 2nd streets, which became the home of the public library for nearly 50 years.
Sallie Hurst Peay, the club’s president at the time, purchased the building at auction as the club's representative.
The building soon became a civic center for various events, such as banquets, lectures, club meetings of all types, concerts and plays.  Over the years, the Clarksville Women's Club has advanced the cultural and civic climate of Clarksville and its residents.
